Residents in five southwest Louisiana parishes can still submit written views on the state’s preliminary 2027-2028 highway priorities after an Oct. 29 legislative hearing in Lake Charles.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development notice says written statements must be handed to the committee or mailed with a postmark within 45 calendar days following the hearing. The Southwest Louisiana road priorities cover Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron and Jefferson Davis parishes.
The hearing has passed, but the written-comment channel remains the practical option for residents who could not attend.
Southwest Louisiana road priorities by parish
| DOTD district | Parish | What residents should identify in a comment |
|---|---|---|
| District 07 | Allen | Project location, route number and the observed problem |
| District 07 | Beauregard | Safety, access, congestion or pavement concern with specific details |
| District 07 | Calcasieu | How a preliminary project affects travel, property or local service |
| District 07 | Cameron | Route reliability, evacuation, freight or coastal access concern |
| District 07 | Jefferson Davis | The requested priority and evidence supporting it |
The examples in the third column are not a state form. They are a practical way to make a public comment easier to evaluate. A statement should distinguish a first-hand observation from a broader claim and include a location that DOTD can identify.
The Road Show is part of the legislative review of the preliminary Highway Priority Program for fiscal year 2027-2028. Each DOTD district holds its own hearing so lawmakers, local officials, agency staff and the public can discuss projects affecting that region.
The 45-day comment timeline
| Step | Date or rule | Status |
|---|---|---|
| District 07 hearing | Oct. 29, 2026, 9 a.m. | Completed |
| Written-comment period | Within 45 calendar days following the hearing | Open after the hearing |
| Calculated 45th day | Dec. 13, 2026 | Daily Quill calendar calculation; submit earlier |
| Mailing rule | Postmarked within the official period | Keep proof of the mailing date |
The Dec. 13 date is a calendar calculation from the language in the DOTD notice, not a separately published agency deadline. Because Dec. 13 falls on a Sunday, mailing earlier avoids uncertainty about postmarks, office hours or how the committee counts the first day. The agency’s official phrase, “within 45 calendar days following the hearing,” controls.
Written statements can be mailed to the Joint Transportation, Highways and Public Works Committee, care of Louisiana DOTD Section 85, P.O. Box 94245, Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9245. DOTD also links to an online Highway Priority Program comment option from its announcement.
What makes a useful road comment
A specific record is more useful than a general request to fix roads. Residents can include:
| – The highway or route number and nearest intersection, bridge or landmark. |
|---|
| – A short description of crashes, flooding, delays or access limits, with a source when available. |
| – The effect on school travel, emergency access, freight, work trips or evacuation. |
| – A clear request tied to a project in the preliminary program. |
Comments should avoid publishing another person’s private information. A photo or public record can support a statement, but the sender should retain the original and follow the committee’s submission instructions.
The Daily Quill tracks other deadlines and public hearings on its Community and Public Services desk. Transportation and emergency-access developments also appear in Weather and Environment coverage.
What happens after the comment period
The hearing and comments inform legislative review of a preliminary program. They do not guarantee that a requested project will be funded, moved forward or completed in the 2027-2028 fiscal year.
The next records to watch are revisions to the Highway Priority Program and legislative action on the final list. For now, Southwest Louisiana residents have a defined route into the record: identify the project, explain the local consequence and submit the comment early enough to preserve a valid postmark.
