Alabama Isaias Tax Relief: 5 Essential Filing Facts

Alabama Isaias tax relief filing guide with the February 2027 deadline An original editorial illustration of Alabama disaster tax deadline planning, created for The Daily Quill.

Alabama Isaias tax relief gives certain residents and businesses in 40 declared counties until Feb. 4, 2027, to file individual income tax returns that were due Oct. 15, 2026. The Alabama Department of Revenue says eligible relief is automatic.

The extension concerns filing deadlines, not every unpaid tax bill. In particular, 2025 tax-year payments that were due April 15, 2026, are not postponed by this announcement.

The Alabama Department of Revenue notice separates automatic relief from requests that need individual review.

Situation Treatment in the state notice
Taxpayer lives or operates a business in one of the 40 declared counties Eligible filing relief is automatic
Individual return was due Oct. 15, 2026 New filing deadline is Feb. 4, 2027
2025 income-tax payment was due April 15, 2026 Payment deadline is not extended

The federal government maintains the controlling list of eligible localities. Taxpayers should verify the county through the IRS disaster relief page rather than rely on an unofficial county list.

Filing relief and payment relief are different

An extension to file does not erase tax, interest or penalties that may attach to a payment due on an earlier date. ALDOR explicitly excludes 2025 tax-year payments originally due April 15, 2026, from the new relief.

For that reason, Alabama Isaias tax relief should not be read as a blanket postponement of every balance or return.

That distinction matters for people who received an ordinary six-month filing extension. The Oct. 15 return deadline moved, but the underlying payment date generally did not. Keep the disaster notice, filing confirmation and any payment records together.

When no request is required

ALDOR says taxpayers with an address of record inside the covered area do not need to contact the department to receive eligible automatic relief. If a qualifying notice or penalty is later issued, use the instructions on that notice and retain proof of location and filing.

People outside the designated counties may still request relief when the hurricane disrupted records, a preparer or business operations. That review is not automatic and does not guarantee approval.

How to verify the correct county rule

Start with the address used on the affected return, then compare that location with the current federal disaster list linked by ALDOR. A mailing address, business location and records-storage location can differ, which is why taxpayers outside the designated area may need a case-by-case request.

Write down the page date and keep a copy of the official notice used to make the decision. If the return involves more than one state, several business locations or a deceased taxpayer, contact the appropriate tax authority or a qualified professional instead of assuming one disaster extension controls every filing.

Official Alabama contact routing

ALDOR lists separate numbers by tax type: individual income tax at 334-353-0602, corporate income tax at 334-242-1200, pass-through entities at 334-242-1033, sales and use tax at 334-242-1490, business privilege tax at 334-353-7923 and withholding tax at 334-353-7680.

Use the division tied to the filing in question. Do not send Social Security numbers, bank details or full tax documents through an unsolicited email or social-media message.

What to retain

Keep the filed return, electronic acceptance, payment records, the ALDOR relief notice and any correspondence about a case-by-case request. Businesses should also retain records showing where they operated and how access to books or staff was disrupted.

This report summarizes the published agency notice and is not individualized tax advice. The safest next step is to verify location eligibility, separate filing from payment obligations and use the official ALDOR contact for the relevant tax type.

Any later Alabama Isaias tax relief notice from ALDOR or the IRS would control over this summary, so recheck the official pages before filing.
