Louisiana residents using the automatic extension for their 2025 state individual income-tax return have until Monday, Nov. 16, to file, but the extension did not postpone payment due in May.
The Louisiana Department of Revenue says individual taxpayers did not need to request the six-month filing extension. It applies to the return, not to tax that was due May 15. Late payment can still bring penalties and interest.
Louisiana tax extension deadline options
| Filing route | Timing record | Main check |
|---|---|---|
| LaTAP | Electronic submission is credited immediately | Save the confirmation |
| Approved tax software | Electronic record is generated | Verify acceptance after transmission |
| Paper return | Timeliness depends on the USPS postmark | Mail early or obtain documented mailing proof |
The comparison combines the deadline notice with the department’s separate mail-in filing warning.
LDR says USPS now generally applies a postmark when an item is first processed at a postal facility, not necessarily when it is placed in a mailbox or handed to a carrier. A return deposited on the deadline could therefore receive a later postmark.
Taxpayers who mail close to the deadline can ask for a manual postmark at a USPS retail counter and consider certified mail, registered mail or a certificate of mailing. The department strongly encourages eligible taxpayers to use LaTAP instead.
General sales tax, withholding tax and annual Form 1099-NEC summary filings must be submitted electronically and may not be mailed, according to LDR. The Nov. 16 individual deadline should not be applied to an unrelated business filing.
Keep the return, supporting records and confirmation together. An electronic transmission that is rejected still needs attention, and a mailing receipt does not prove the return itself was complete.
The deadline applies to the 2025 Louisiana individual income-tax return for calendar-year filers using the automatic extension. It is not a new extension request window. A taxpayer who already filed should not submit a duplicate return merely because the deadline is approaching.
Before submitting, confirm the name, Social Security number, filing status, bank information and attachments against the final return. If software reports a rejection, read the rejection code and correct the return through the same verified filing channel. Keep proof of the accepted submission rather than only a screenshot of the transmit button.
Someone who expects a refund can still be affected by an incomplete or rejected return. A person who owed tax in May should not assume the November filing date erases interest or penalty exposure. LDR’s account tools provide the official record of filings and payments.
The Daily Quill’s Business and Money desk tracks regional filing and business deadlines. The key next date for this return is Nov. 16. Taxpayers with account-specific questions should use LDR’s official help channels or a qualified tax professional.
