Mississippi Absentee Voting Deadline Is Saturday

The Mississippi absentee voting deadline for casting an in-person ballot is Saturday, Oct. 31, placing the final weekend cutoff three days before the Nov. 3 general election.

The Mississippi Secretary of State’s election reminder says polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Anyone in line at 7 p.m. is legally entitled to vote.

Absentee voters should distinguish between the in-person deadline and the separate rules for a ballot returned by mail. The deadlines are not interchangeable.

Voter action Deadline
Cast an absentee ballot in person Saturday, Oct. 31
Get a mailed absentee ballot postmarked Tuesday, Nov. 3
County receives a properly postmarked mailed ballot Tuesday, Nov. 10
Present photo ID after voting by affidavit because ID was not available Tuesday, Nov. 10
Vote at the polls Tuesday, Nov. 3, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

Official absentee voting information says circuit clerks’ offices are required to be open from 8 a.m. until noon on the Saturday before Election Day for absentee voting.

Voters should still confirm the correct office, their eligibility for absentee voting and local procedures before traveling. Mississippi does not treat absentee voting as a universal early-voting system; a voter must meet an eligible reason under state law.

Check the ballot and polling place by address

The state’s My Election Day portal provides a polling place and sample ballot tied to a voter’s address. The Secretary of State advises users to select the matching address that appears as they type.

Checking the sample ballot before Tuesday can reduce surprises at the polling place, especially when local races or questions differ by precinct. Voters can also use the portal to verify where to go rather than relying on an older polling location.

Photo ID and affidavit follow-up

Mississippi requires an acceptable form of photo identification at the polls. A voter who does not present acceptable ID may cast an affidavit ballot, but that ballot requires follow-up.

State guidance says the voter must present acceptable photo ID to the circuit clerk’s office by Nov. 10 for the affidavit ballot to be counted. That creates a second deadline after Election Day that should not be overlooked.

Election rules also restrict campaigning within 150 feet of an entrance to a polling place. Poll managers must maintain a 30-foot area around the entrance so voters can enter without interference. The state reminder says voters may not photograph a marked ballot.

Questions can be directed to the Mississippi Elections Division at 1-800-829-6786. The most immediate action for an absentee voter is to confirm the circuit clerk’s Saturday hours and complete the ballot before noon Oct. 31 rather than waiting until Election Day.
