El Paso I-10 Closure Warning Covers 51-Hour Eastbound Detour

El Paso I-10 closure barricades and bridge work in the west Texas desert A Daily Quill editorial visualization of overnight bridge work on I-10 in west El Paso County.

The El Paso I-10 closure shuts the eastbound interstate between Anthony and Transmountain for 51 hours beginning at 3 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. TxDOT directs eastbound traffic to South Desert, through the Anthony and Vinton intersection, and back onto I-10 after Los Mochis.

The full closure is scheduled to end at 6 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9. Crews will place bridge deck as part of the I-10 widening project. This is not the only restriction in the next nine days: the same eastbound segment closes again the following weekend, and a westbound closure is scheduled Thursday night.

El Paso I-10 closure and detour matrix

Direction and segment Window Official route or effect
I-10 eastbound, Anthony to Transmountain Nov. 7 at 3 a.m. to Nov. 9 at 6 a.m. Full closure; use South Desert through Anthony and Vinton, then re-enter after Los Mochis
I-10 eastbound, same segment Nov. 14 at 3 a.m. to Nov. 16 at 6 a.m. Second 51-hour full closure with the same posted detour
I-10 westbound, Los Mochis to Anthony Nov. 12 at 9 p.m. to Nov. 13 at 6 a.m. Exit at Los Mochis, use North Desert through Vinton and Anthony, then re-enter after Anthony
I-10 and frontage roads, Anthony to Mesa Nov. 9-14 as needed Alternating lane closures during published day and night work periods

The two 51-hour eastbound closures are easy to confuse. The first covers this weekend. The second starts one week later. Drivers who make a recurring weekend trip should put both windows on the calendar rather than treating Monday’s reopening as the end of the project impacts.

Where the detour is likely to concentrate traffic

The official route moves interstate traffic onto South Desert and through surface intersections at Anthony and Vinton. That makes intersection delay part of the trip even when the detour remains open. TxDOT does not promise a travel time, so a schedule should not assume the frontage-road route will move at interstate speed.

Drivers entering eastbound I-10 west of Anthony will meet the closure before Transmountain. A traveler starting inside the affected corridor should check which entrance remains reachable instead of driving toward a closed ramp. Commercial operators should also confirm that the detour fits vehicle and permit restrictions.

For airport, medical or shift-change trips, the useful calculation is not merely 51 hours. It is the number of surface intersections added to the route and the time of day those intersections will be carrying displaced interstate traffic. An early departure provides more protection than a minute-by-minute estimate that TxDOT did not publish.

The El Paso I-10 closure also changes how drivers should share directions. A message that says only “take the frontage road” leaves out the re-entry point after Los Mochis. A complete handoff should name South Desert, the Anthony and Vinton intersection and the point where eastbound traffic can return to I-10.

The TxDOT closure notice is the controlling schedule. DriveTexas can show current conditions once work begins. Field signs take priority if construction conditions change.

What happens after the weekend

From Monday, Nov. 9, through Saturday, Nov. 14, TxDOT lists alternating closures on eastbound and westbound I-10 between Anthony and Mesa, along with North and South Desert. The stated work periods are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily and 9 p.m.-6 a.m. nightly, as needed. Crews will conduct dirt work and miscellaneous removals.

Thursday’s westbound closure is different from the two weekend shutdowns. It runs one night, from Los Mochis to Anthony, while crews place concrete girders and work on the temporary Anthony exit. Its detour uses North Desert rather than South Desert.

Readers tracking other regional disruptions can use The Daily Quill’s consumer guides and topic index to separate current closures by place and date.

Before leaving, save the direction, start time and re-entry point rather than only the phrase “I-10 closure.” The next verification point is 6 a.m. Monday, when the first eastbound closure is scheduled to end. Continue following DriveTexas until the roadway is shown open.

If the first closure ends on schedule, keep this report bookmarked. The second El Paso I-10 closure uses the same 51-hour clock beginning Nov. 14, so a successful trip this weekend does not mean the following weekend is clear.
