Medicare open enrollment is underway, giving Alabama beneficiaries until Dec. 7, 2026, to compare coverage for 2027. Changes selected during this annual period generally take effect Jan. 1.
The deadline applies to people reviewing Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription-drug coverage. It is not a requirement to change plans, but federal and state officials advise beneficiaries to check their options because premiums, covered drugs, pharmacy arrangements, provider networks and extra benefits can change from year to year.
Alabamians who want neutral help can use the state’s free health-insurance counseling program rather than relying only on sales advertising.
During Medicare open enrollment, beneficiaries can review options without assuming that a change is required.
Medicare open enrollment checklist for Alabama
Before comparing plans, gather:
- The Annual Notice of Change and Evidence of Coverage from the current plan.
- A complete list of prescriptions, doses and preferred pharmacies.
- The names of doctors, hospitals and other providers a beneficiary wants to keep.
- Expected travel or time spent outside the plan’s service area.
- A list of benefits that matter, such as dental, vision, hearing or transportation.
Then total the expenses likely to arise across all 12 months instead of stopping at the advertised premium. Deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, drug tiers and out-of-pocket limits can have a larger effect than a low monthly premium.
The official Medicare Plan Finder lets users enter prescriptions and pharmacies to compare estimated costs. Confirm important details with the plan before enrolling, then retain the dated enrollment confirmation with other coverage records.
A careful Medicare open enrollment comparison includes both annual cost estimates and access to preferred doctors, hospitals and pharmacies.
What federal projections do—and do not—show
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services projects that the national weighted average Medicare Advantage premium will decline from $14.37 in 2026 to $12 in 2027. The agency projects that the national average premium for a stand-alone Part D prescription-drug plan will rise by less than $1, from $35.09 to $36.
Those figures are national averages, not price quotes for Alabama residents. A particular plan may cost more or less, and its coverage details may change. CMS therefore urges beneficiaries to review their personal choices during the enrollment period. The agency’s 2027 Medicare announcement also notes that broad national availability does not make every plan suitable for every person.
People with employer or retiree coverage should check with the benefits administrator before changing Medicare coverage. A switch can affect other coverage and may be difficult to reverse.
Medicare open enrollment does not override the special rules that may apply to employer, union or retiree coverage.
Free Alabama counseling is available
Alabama’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program, known as SHIP, offers free and confidential counseling. The program says its counselors are not affiliated with insurance companies and do not sell plans.
SHIP can help beneficiaries understand Medicare, compare prescription-drug choices, review billing or claims questions and learn about Medicare Savings Programs. Alabama residents can reach the program through the local Area Agency on Aging or by dialing 800-243-5463, also branded as 1-800-AGE-LINE. Details are available on the Alabama SHIP page.
Beneficiaries should guard their Medicare number and personal information. An unexpected caller offering a limited-time plan or demanding immediate enrollment should not be treated as a trusted counselor. Use Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE or Alabama SHIP to verify information independently.
What to do after choosing coverage
After submitting a Medicare open enrollment choice, save the confirmation number, the date and the plan name. Watch for plan materials and a membership card, then verify that the information matches the selection. Do not cancel existing coverage merely because a caller says a new application is pending.
If a Medicare open enrollment confirmation does not arrive or the selection appears wrong, contact Medicare or Alabama SHIP promptly and keep notes from the conversation. Beneficiaries should also tell their regular pharmacy and medical offices about coverage changes before the first 2027 visit.
